Welcome to the Centre for Research in Mass Spectrometry at York University

The Centre for Research in Mass Spectrometry (CRMS) was established in May 2000. The Centre's mandate is to promote and to organize research collaboration with other universities, hospitals, government institutes, such as Environment Canada and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment (OME), and industries, such as MDS SCIEX, Eli Lilly and Norgen. Research in mass spectrometry has become an increasingly important and multi-disciplinary scientific activity world-wide. Areas of application include proteomics and functional genomics, atmospheric chemistry, analytical chemistry and combustion science.

The Centre for Research in Mass Spectrometry aims to take a leading role in the education and training of researchers and practitioners in the field of mass spectrometry. Students, Post-doctoral Fellows of the CRMS faculty are in high demand and many of them are hired directly by Canada's high-technology companies, such as MDS SCIEX, MDS Proteomics and Syn-X Pharma, and hospitals, including Toronto's Sunnybrook and Women's Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital, and Sick Children's Hospital.
Faculty, Facility and Support:
CRMS has a faculty of 11 from the Departments of Chemistry and Biology, including one adjunct professor who is a principal research scientist at MDS SCIEX. The numbers of students and PDFs vary, but typically there are approximately 15 PDFs and Research Associates, and 25 graduate students. The Centre has a suite of 15 mass spectrometers: triple quadrupoles, hybrid QTOFs, an ion trap, a Qtrap; ion mobility spectrometers, a selected-ion flow-tube mass spectrometer, and a flame mass spectrometer. Faculty members are well supported by National Science Engineering Research Council (NSERC), Canadian Institute for Health Research, National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC), Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI), Ontario Innovation Trust (OIT), Ontario Research and Development Challenge Fund (ORDCF), Genome Canada, National Research Council (NRC), Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Science (CFCAS), MDS SCIEX, Eli Lilly, and Environment Canada.
RESEARCH AREAS
Many of the CRMS research projects are collaborative and inter-disciplinary. CRMS scientists are developing new instruments and applications with MDS SCIEX; identifying markers for endometrial cancer in collaboration with researchers in Toronto hospitals, and examining atmospheric particles composition and fate of atmospheric hydrocarbons. CRMS is the York Node in the Ontario Protein Identification Facility established by ORDCF and Genome Canada. Fundamental research of note includes metal ion reactions with organic and bio molecules, and structures and chemistries of peptide ions.
